Almost Hell part 2

The shoot was good however i don't think the outcome was as good as it could have been. In my opinion these are like every other in the subject, they don't stand out, almost boring if i was to go that far. I think should again ad go almost to another level. The images need to be a lot darker, although i don't want to go as far as amateur porn.

Im thinking; props, maybe another person, slight/ subtle use of colour more obvious with what is happening, maybe take aspects from the shoot with Frankie and get more involved with lighting.

I find that these images are away from the point of my work/ project. When looking through my images i find myself distracted, being thrown into a world of abuse and sexual references, instead of getting a sense of being trapped and wanting to escape, or being smouthered. I think the only way you get that from these images is that she may not want to be there, however the detail shows its almost like she enjoys the attention like its a game.

I have been looking at images from Brian Moss.

Larry Clark!

I love his book 'Tulsa'. So much i did a homage to one of his famous photos from the collection.

My homage; the subject is my brother.

Love The Metal

Gigs are a great place to take pictures, especially if you love the music being played. these were taken earlier this year, i chill with the people in the images from time to time. Its my friends gig, i said i would take pictures to get in to the place for free, however i managed to get some good pictures from it as well.

subjects;
Matt - guitar
Ethan - bass
Westy - vocals
close-ups in the crowd were; martin (steveo) and mike along with others.

Metropolis

The following images were part of a project called Metropolis. Using black and white to create contrasted images, showing a strange view on life in the city, they are a mixture of shots from London and Plymouth.

Almost Hell

Im planning a shoot after looking through Cau Youtau's, a chinese photographers images.
Below is a good site showing some very interesting work. The other is specifically Cau Youtau.

Contempory art in china, especially photography has become very dark and shocking to viewers in the western world. Artist’s in china make, for example; the UK and US look better as a society and much higher up in economy. This is because people in the western world are arrogant and tend to love themselves and so playing to this will get them to purchase the work. When I look at this images I feel better about myself even if they are shocking and disturbing images purely because I am not in that situation.

Wang Ningde is another chinese photographer, i want to take certain aspects of his images for my own, for example; back of the head shots, keeping the subjects anonymous etc

In china around the time of 1979 a one child rule was brought in to prevent the increase of china’s population and despite this being very controversial within and outside the country a survey undertaken at the pew research centre showed that just over 75% of the Chinese population supports the policy. Wang Nindge used this policy for his images. Shots of children from behind staring into light. The children used as subjects were male, this was because due to the one child rule couples were trying for males (in this culture all of the families possessions are passed on to the eldest male in the family/ the son) as a result of this there were many infant deaths, being female as the families didn’t want them and were unable to try for another child.

A very strange shoot with 'Frankie'

This wasn't a shoot that i set up, i was just able to take photos of what was happening to Frankie. It was something he set up for a project. He tied himself up and was blind folded and gagged and then said, whilst being filmed, that people could come and do whatever they wanted within reason.

Bound, blind folded and practically naked. It seemed that there weren't any rules. I believe these to be a collection about him being trapped and unable to escape what he has become and/ or what is happening

Self Portraits

This collection was a response to finding a collection by Susan Derges called, 'Observer and Observed'. Its done through reflections, not through using vibrations from a speak through a water filled tube and a strobe light like Susan's.

The website is hard to move through, so; go to the left of the page and scroll over navigation menu, select gallery and then on the list select 'Observer and Observed'

I prefer the cropped images to the full head and shoulder shots. I think the abstract /(hard to see) approach works a lot better and presents a more interesting image to look at.

Foundation final images

I was lucky enough to shoot a female body builder. Shots of her working out and posing. She has just start training and wasn't at competition standard however still looked ripped.

Featured woman, Lisa Cross.

I was looking at a photographer called  Bill Dobbins. He seems to concentrate on glamour and lingerie pictures. The light he achieves is really good and shows the women for being goddess's instead of some strange things that a lot of people seem to view them as.

For the black and white images. I was influenced by a self taught Photographer from the US called Brian Moss. With his body builder images, he seems to be very loose with the composition, almost the opposite to Bill Dobbins, showing the subjects as being subjects instead of people. I didn't do this, instead i made links between the subject and the surrounds.
